Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the content and quality of the information presented on websites about urological disorders. “Varicocele” and “varicocelectomy” were chosen as pilot subjects.

Materials and methods: The terms “varicocele” and “varicocelectomy” were searched with the three different Internet search engines used most commonly in Turkey. First 10 websites shown as the result of searching were included in the study. After eliminating repeated websites from a pool of 60 websites, 20 websites were enrolled in the study. The contents of the websites were evaluated and scored out of 14 points according to accuracy and factual extent for certain topics, according to the European Urology Association Guidelines.

Results: Of the 20 websites that were evaluated, 4 were evaluated and managed by urologists, 4 by gynecologists, 5 by commercial companies, and 7 by unknown owners. The mean score of websites offering information about varicocele and varicocelectomy was 7.05±2.98 (range 2-13). Websites established by urologists included the most accurate and complete information (mean score 10.25±3.09).

Conclusion: This is the first study evaluating the content of websites on a urologic illness in Turkey. Health-related information in such websites should be evaluated by specialists; moreover, this information should be accredited within the framework of specific standards to prevent disinformation. This topic requires further study.
