Abstract

The aim of our study is to evaluate the differences of body image perception of patients undergoing ileal neobladder and ileal conduit procedures in the Turkish population.

39 male patients who have undergone radical cystectomy have been included in the study. 25 of the participants were ileal conduit and 14 ileal neobladder patients. A 12-question body dismorphic disorder scale (BDDS) has been applied to patients after postoperative 6th month. The same investigator has applied the questions to the patients. The mean scores obtained from the two groups have been compared using t-test statistical analysis.

The mean age was 57.3±8.2 years in the ileal conduit group and 58.6±6.6 years in the ileal neobladder group (p>0.1). The mean BDDS scores of the ileal conduit group and the ileal neobladder group were 15.6±3.2 and 15.4±4.3, respectively. There was no statistical difference between the two groups (p> 0,5).

The change in the body image perception of patients with urinary diversions is not significant between the ileal neobladder and ileal conduit patients in our study. Therefore when deciding on the best available option for urinary diversion, the main considerations should be the pre and post-operative complication rate rather than the body image.
