Abstract
Ejaculatory duct obstruction is a rare cause of infertility. With the widely use of transrectal ultrasonography, such obstruction are being diagnosed more frequently and promising results can be obtained in the current practice. We evaluated the positive change in semen quality and spontaneous pregnancy rate in patient underwent TUR-ED for obstructive infertility in our clinic.
Between April 95 and May 2000, the subfertile patients presented with low semen volume and severe oligospermia were evaluated with clinical and laboratory examination. We detected intraprostatic ejaculatory duct classification in 7, Mullerian canal cyst in 5 and ejaculatory duct cyst in 2 patients. All 14 patients with different types of distal ejaculatory tract obstruction underwent TUR-ED in our department.
The mean age was 29 (23-51) and mean fallow-up period was 8.7 (2-13) months. 11 patients had primary and 3 secondary infertility. Fallowing TUR-ED in 9 out of 14 patients (64.2%) improvement in varying degrees was seen in the semen quality. Only one spontaneous pregnancy was detected.
In distal obstructive infertility, TUR-ED is the standard treatment modality in selected patient with significant improvement in the semen quality and occasional spontaneous pregnancy.
